Barilla’s green commitment: €168 million “Energy & Water Plan” by 2030

Barilla has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship by launching a massive €168 million “Energy & Water Plan”, aimed at transforming its industrial operations by 2030. To mark this long-term vision, the company participated in the “M’Illumino di Meno” initiative, symbolically turning off the lights at its Pedrignano headquarters. However, the true impact lies in its structural goals: the group aims to reach 24 MW of self-produced renewable energy within the next four years, significantly reducing its reliance on external fossil fuels and strengthening industrial resilience.

The investment strategy focuses on three pillars: enhancing energy efficiency in industrial processes, optimizing water resource management, and expanding on-site renewable energy plants. Already, 25 of Barilla’s 30 global sites—including all European factories—hold the ISO 50001 energy management certification. Notably, its Italian bakeries now operate on 100% renewable electricity. For instance, the Mulino Bianco brand has utilized hydroelectric power from Lake Resia for over five years, while the Rubbiano sauce plant uses its new solar installations to power an entire day of production per week during summer peaks.

Barilla is also leveraging advanced technology through its energy saving program and high-efficiency trigenerations systems. By tripling its solar capacity in Italy over the last two years—and planning to triple it again by 2026—the group is integrating sustainability directly into its brand identity. This approach positions Barilla as a leader in the global transition toward a circular and carbon-conscious food industry.
